The house is in a small village whose inhabitants are mainly winemakers. It is in the department of the Tarn, about an hours’ drive east of Toulouse airport. It has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms (1 en suite), livingroom, large kitchen, den and laundry room. There is a good fireplace in the livingroom. Linens, dishes and all usual equipment are supplied. There is a terrace at the front of the house, and beyond it a large shady garden. The livingroom and master bedroom look over the garden and the hills. All other rooms look over one or the other. The exterior is stone covered by stucco, which keeps it cool in summer. It is about 150 years old. We have a telephone, fax, mail delivery, and the assistance of a local family in case of emergencies.

In addition to the wonderful countryside -- fairly gentle hills with twisting roads following the river valleys, vineyards and a forest -- there are many charming mediaeval hill towns that are still walled and intact. There are potters, glassblowers, weavers near by, plus many antique shops. Among the day trips possible are those to the prehistoric caves to the north, to a stunning mediaeval pilgrimage site and treasury in the hills to the east, Carcassonne to the south, and the superb town of Albi with the Toulouse-Lautrec museum and the remarkable cathedral. The important city of Toulouse has a vast number of pleasures and treasures, including an opera house. and a fine orchestra. It is about a 2-1/2 hour drive from our house to the Mediterranean, 3-4 hours to the Pyrenees, 6 hours to Barcelona, 5 to Avignon. Excellent small, family-run restaurants abound everywhere. Toulouse has a Michelin 3-star restaurant and a range of others.
